I don't recommend either of these, though, as we got hit in the face a whole bunch by folks in the dark, empty room and got briefly sued by a woman who didn't keep track of how many stairs there were as she ran away from the chainsaw, and cushioning her fall with her face.
When I was in, say, fifth grade, I found a book in the local library about how to make a haunted house (sadly I cannot remember the title), and absolutely had to get two of my friends to do it with me, for the benefit of my little sister and her friends.
One haunted house I experienced while in college was in the canyons of Utah.
