Literature

Even though the plaza has been used for many events and occasions since then, the historical connotation of Hitler's speech remains strong in the public perception. Heldenplatz was Bernhard’s last play, the play that probably killed him (he died three months into its stage run, finally succumbing to a serious heart condition that could not withstand the scandal he himself had initiated).
Heldenplatz premiered under tight police security on 4 November 1988, fifty years after the Anschluss, and fifty years almost to the day after Kristallnacht (9 November 1938) for which Vienna has a particularly despicable record.
It was at Heldenplatz that the crowds gathered in 1934 to mourn the assassination of their right-wing chancellor, Engelbert Dollfuss.
