One of the early street gangs to emerge after the American Civil War, the Hell's Kichten Gang was one of the earliest street gangs in the Irish neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen. Led by Dutch Heinrichs, the gang would control Hell's Kitchen committing extortion and armed robbery for over twenty years. The gang eventually merged with Ike Marsh's Tenth Avenue Gang in 1870 raiding the Hudson River railroad yards near 30th Street. While the gang was successful the railroad company began offering bounties to railroad detectives for the arrest of each gang member eventually resulting in Heinrichs arrest and sentenced to five years inprisonment. The gang's power would decline until gradually being replaced by younger street gangs continuing a cycle as Hell's Kitchen was dominated by various street gangs throughout the twenteith century up until members of the Westies were convicted in a series of Federal investigations in the 1980s.
