Heller In Pink Tights is a 1960 film adapted from Louis L'Amour's 1936 novel, Heller With A Gun. It stars Sophia Loren and Anthony Quinn and was directed by George Cukor who also directed Gone With the Wind. The movie is noted for it's lavishly ornate costumes by Edith Head and it's impressive photography and usage of technicolor. Though not a commercial success, Heller In Pink Tights is thought by some film historians to be George Cukor's most lavishly visual film. Cukor had never been pleased with the 'look' of most westerns and he hired George Hoyningen-Huene, a famous Russian-born fashion photographer and 1920's illustrator who was an expert at art and design. The final result is a very unique film that looks like a cross between a Frederic Remington painting and a Toulouse-Lautrec rendering of music hall performers. It also stars former child star Margaret O'Brien, Ramon Navarro and Eileen Heckhart. It also marks Sophia Loren's lowest weight on film, the normally voluptuous and full-figured star lost almost twenty pounds at Cukor's request and donned a blond wig. Once there, the group starts their next engagement, but the past catches up to them and Tom and Angie have to decide if they are going to stay and work out the problems or keep on running.
This barebones release from Paramount gets a kudos point for its release in its correct original aspect ratio and for being billed as a member of the "Widescreen Collection." But that is where the praise ends, as the anamorphic print shows its age with a heavy coating of grain, dust, dirt, and noticeable flickers.
With the opening shot of grand vistas, I had high hopes for Heller in PinkTights, but this movie is as empty as the wild country it's set in.
