General Helmuth Weidling was the German officer who surrended Berlin to the Soviet forces in the final stages of world war two.

General der Artillerie (General of the Artillery) Helmuth Weidling (November 2, 1891 – November 17, 1955) was a German Army officer and the last German commandant of Berlin during the final assault by Soviet forces just before the end of World War II in Europe.
On 1 January 1942, Weidling was appointed to command the 86th Infantry Division and a month later was promoted to the rank of Major General.
Weidling died on 17 November 1955, apparently in the custody of the KGB.

On April 10, 1945 Weidling was relieved and appointed to the Führerreserve.
General of the Artillery Weidling died in 1955 as a Soviet prisoner of war.
