Hengshui has many famous sights including its temple complete with dilpidated pagoda, the local KFC, Hengshui night club (with retro bouncy dance floor), the cultural revolution restaurant and wh could forget its range of coffee shops. Hengshui has been compared to Dickens' 'Cocketown' from the novel Hard Times by young foreign professionals teaching there who escaped to Beijing for western food and decent coffee every now and again. Transport Hengshui has some of the worst transport links in China. In order to go anywhere else you must first make the 2 hour journey to Shijiazhaung the state capital of Hebei province or, failing that, a three hour trainride to Beijing. On completion of this journey it is still not guaranteed that a seat will be available on a train for the next four months. Foreigners in town On Heping Road in the north west of the city you will find Hengshui University at which 5 Laowai are employed as Laoshi (teachers) every year. These people are known to spend much of their time marking and lesson planning and failing that creating games such as 'room pong' to make up for their lack of coordination which is required for ping pong. The foreign teachers in the 2006-07 academic year included a soviet spy seeking to learn the ways of true communism which her country had given up on and someone whos nickname ended up being the same as that of the muslim prophet for the simple reason that his students could not pronounce the full syllables of his name. The pair are wanted in China for indecent activities conducted in a soft sleeper compartment on the Shanghai to beijing train and for vandalism to a soft sleeper compartment on a Chengdu to Shijiazhaung train. It is believed they headed south although they may now be laying low in north London. |
