Career

Walthall began his career in movies as early as 1908, in a film shot called Rescued from an Eagle's Nest, which also featured another young actor named D.W. Griffith. As the industry grew in size and popularity, Griffith emerged as a director and Walthall found himself a mainstay of the Griffith company, frequently working alongside such Griffith regulars as Owen Moore, Kate Bruce and Jack and Mary Pickford. 1908 (MCMVIII) is a leap year starting on Wednesday (link will take you to calendar). ... Given the relatively short length of films in the early years, Walthall frequently found himself cast in dozens of films each year. For those still unfamiliar with his face however, he gained national attention in 1915 for his role as Colonel Ben Wallace in Griffith's highly influential and controversial epic The Birth of a Nation. Walthall's portrayal of a Confederate veteran rounding up the Ku Klux Klan won him large-scale fame, and Walthall was soon able to emerge as a leading actor in the years leading up to the 1920s, parting ways with Griffith. 1915 (MCMXV) was a common year starting on Friday (see link for calendar). ... Walthall was married twice. His first marriage, to Isabel Fenton, ended in divorce after ten years in 1917. Henry B. Walthall: Film Review--The Talkies 1935-1936 (1892 words)
The Walthall Factor is a combination of Walthall's time on screen, the treatment of his role (was the character he played worthy of his talents), and--ultimately--whether or not I enjoyed watching him in the role (it is, after all, my website).
Walthall is sheriff Cal Yates who has become a victim of modernization as a young, go-getter has taken over the reigns and Yates is relegated to listening to complaints from old ladies.
Walthall was ill obviously as he reportedly collapsed during the taping of China Clipper and did not live to see the finished product; however, save for being very thin, I think he appears very vibrant in his scenes (of course, who knows what was left on the cutting room floor?).
