Early life

Heitfeld was born in St. Louis, Missouri on January 12, 1859, where he attended public and private schools. He moved to Kansas, then Washington, and finally to Lewiston, Idaho in 1883, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits and stock raising. Political Life

He was elected as a member to the Idaho State senate from 1894 to 1897, then was elected as a Populist to the United States Senate for one term, from 1897 to 1903, when he was not a candidate for reelection. He was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Idaho in 1904, and served as mayor of Lewiston from 1905 to 1909. From 1914 to 1922 he was a register of the United States land office at Lewiston. He engaged in fruit growing, and was a member of the board of county commissioners from 1930 to 1936, serving two terms as chairman. He retired in 1938 and resided in Spokane, Washington until his death in that city on October 21, 1938.
