Sherwood objected to Drapers inordinate delay in reintroducing the university bill and to the presenting of it, when the measure was revived, as an open question.
Sherwood was also incensed at the revelation of Drapers secret negotiations with René-Édouard Caron*, which had for their object the introduction of a substantial French Canadian element into the ministry.
Although Sherwood had politicked hard for the post, it was largely by default that on 29 May 1847 he acceded to the attorney generalship west and the leadership of the government.
