Relics and Selves: Iconographies of the National in Argentina, Brazil and Chile, 1880-1890 (3713 words)
Burmeister, a former professor at the Royal Prussian University of Halle, had taken office as director of the Museo Público in 1862 at the invitation of Sarmiento, then Mitre´s minister of government, and remained in charge of the museum until shortly before his death in 1892.
Burmeister was quick to applaud the decree on the protection of national patrimony in Latin America issued by the Mitre government shortly before and passed in 1869, prohibiting the exportation of fossils, a measure from which the museum was the first to benefit.
Burmeister´s advanced age and poor health might provide a clue, as well as his unwillingness to let some of the younger Argentine naturalists (most of whom were his former disciples) assume positions of any responsibility at the museum which he continued to regard as his personal domain.
