The Highborne is a group from the Warcraft universe. They were the personal servants of Azshara in Kalimdor. The Highborne, upon discovery of the Well of Eternity, began to probe the well for secrets to discover the nature of its power. However the Highborne began to spend large amounts of time around it and it began to adversely affect them. Many began to shy away from speaking with the other Night Elves outside of the Highborne circle and increasingly delved into work concerning the Well, now consumed by its magical powers. Azshara made a pact with Sargeras, leader of the Burning Legion, and in return for untold power Azshara and the Highborne would open a portal into Azeroth for Sargeras and his minions. However Malfurion Stormrage, with the help of Tyrande Whisperwind, Cenarius, and fellow Night Elves were able to drive the Burning Legion back. But because the summoning was interrupted the spell went awry and resulted in a terrible explosion that destroyed part of the land of Kalimdor, giving away to the Maelstrom. After the terrible destruction Malfurion and his followers reached the mainland with a few remnants of the Highborne. Malfurion did not punish them however, he was content that the survivng Highborne could do no more damage without the Well's power. The ones that survived eventually left, under the leadership of Dath'Remar, to look for a new home. However Azshara and some of her followers survived the explosion and sank to the bottom of the sea, eventually evolving into the Naga, bidding their time for the right opportunity to strike back. In the Warcraft Universe, the Highborne, or Quel'dorei, were Night Elves who were favored by Queen Azshara, under whose leadership they discovered the Well of Eternity and began experimenting with the magical energy that emanated from it.
The Highborne were reckless in the use of their new magic, however, and inadvertently drew demons into Kalimdor.
The Highborne wandered the world for many years and eventually settled on the continent of Lordaeron, founding their kingdom of Quel'Thalas to the north in a region which resembled their lost homeland.
In the titanic war that followed many Highborne were seduced by the Burning Legion who promised them as much magic as they desired; many gave themselves wholly over to the Burning Legion and were transformed into the first Satyrs.
The Highborne tried to open a portal for Sargeras to to enter the world, however they were foiled by the efforts of Malfurion Stormrage and many Highborne were killed and smashed to the sea floor with Queen Azshara and transformed into the Naga.
A few Highborne survived and made their way with the rest of the Night Elves to Mount Hyjal where they helped rebuild the Night Elven civilization.
