The word "Hindustani" is an adjective used to denote a connection to India, or, more precisely, the historical region that encompasses Northern India, Pakistan, and nearby areas. 'Hindustani' also can be used specifically to identify the ethnic identity of native Hindi speaking peoples, particularly those from the modern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, formally a part of the "United Provinces" during the British rule in the subcontinent during which people were identified in this region as "Hindustanis".

Hindustani tradition extends all the way from Kashmir in the north, Punjab in the west to Bengal / Assam in the east, Maharashtra / north Karnataka in the south.
