Hockeytown is a nickname for the city of Detroit, which arose in the 1990's thanks to a marketing campaign by the city's NHL franchise, the Detroit Red Wings. The nickname, over time, has gained national and international recognition, and has became an official nickname of the Joe Louis Arena. The Twin Cities of Minnesota (Minneapolis and St. Paul) have also been, and still are, known as Hockey Town USA. Minnesota has also been referred to as Hockey Country. In February 2004, 21.27% of all US college players and 13.35% of all college players are from Minnesota. 13.29% and 8.34% respectively are from the state of Michigan. "Hockeytown" is one of Detroit’s nicknames. It got this nickname from its home town hockey team the Detroit Red Wings and the passion the people have for the team. The nickname came around in the late 1990’s. Many people come to Hockeytown to watch the Red Wings play at Joe Louis Arena. The nickname is known by many people all over the United States. The Red Wings have brought many Stanley Cups back to Hockeytown. A "hockey town" can’t just be anywhere it has to be in a city with a great team and where the attendance of the games is very high. There is also a restaurant in Detroit called the Hockeytown Café where many people go to eat before a game, plus the Red Wings' theme song is a song called Hey Hey Hockeytown.
