Holiday Heart Syndrome is a consequence of binge drinking. It is defined as "Arrhythmias of the heart, sometimes apparent after a vacation or weekend away from work, following excessive alcohol consumption; usually transient" [1]. The term was coined by Ettinger et al in 1978 (Ettinger PO, Wu CF, De La Cruz C, et al: Arrhythmias and the "Holiday Heart": alcohol-associated cardiac rhythm disorders. Am Heart J 1978 May; 95(5): 555-62: [2]). A cardiac arrhythmia, also called cardiac dysrhythmia, is a disturbance in the regular rhythm of the heartbeat. ... Holiday heart syndrome is a cardiac rhythm disturbance (usually a supraventricular tachycardia) caused by binge drinking commonly seen on weekends and around holidays.
The pathophysiology of holiday heart syndrome isn't well understood, but arrhythmias may be associated with epinephrine and norepinephrine release, a rise in plasma fatty acids, or a conduction delay caused by acetaldehyde-a primary metabolite of alcohol.
