Holland Marsh is a farm-producing flatlands that much of the area that used to be a swamp. The area is located northwest of Toronto and southwest of Lake Simcoe. It was later drained which made room for farms. The length is about 15 km long and about 4 km wide. The location runs from 44 to 44.15 N and from 73.8 to about 73.65 W. The swamplands are presently to the northeast and are a protected area. The Holland River flows in the middle of the marsh. Holland Landing is located to the east. Holland Marsh divides Gwillimbury into East Gwillimbury to the east and Bradford-West Gwillimbury to the west (then West Gwillimbury) and King is south of the Holland River extending east to Bathurst, Bradford is located northeast of the swamp. The Holland Canal which runs in the northern portion lies near the hills and runs within Canal Road to near Bradford. Holland marsh are entirely irrigated with ditches on the side of the countryside roads. The main crop of the area are fruits and vegetables. The superhighway (Highway 400) crosses in the westcentral portion of Holland Marsh, Yonge Street and the CN rail (Toronto - Barrie) is situated to the northeast. Geography

The marsh extends from southwest of Canal Road and Highway 9 (Orangeville - Newmarket), south to Highway 9 and Jane Street, near Bradford and northeast into Lake Simcoe. The marsh is surrounded by hills scattered to the north and the south with plentiful of pine forests and to the east. The forests also lie to the west.


History

Holland Marsh, 2900 ha of organic (muck) soil, is located near BRADFORD WEST GWILLIMBURY, Ont, 50 km north of Toronto.
Draining to the northeast by the Holland River (which empties into Cook's Bay, an arm of Lake SIMCOE), the marsh is a flat, level area lying in a shallow basin (oriented in a northeast-southwest direction) that was an arm of glacial Lake Algonquin.
The marsh today is a market garden for the Ontario and foreign markets, producing carrots and onions in particular, as well as lettuce, potatoes, celery, parsnips, cabbage, cauliflower and beets.
