Holometabolism, also called complete metamorphism, is a term applied to insect groups to describe the specific kind of insect development which includes four life stages - as an embryo, a larva, a pupa and an imago. For example, in the life cycle of a butterfly, the embryo grows within the egg, hatching into the larval stage caterpillar, before entering the pupal stage within its chrysalis and finally emerging as an adult butterfly imago. Metamorphosis in biology is physical development of the individual after birth or hatching involving significant change in form as well as growth and differentiation. ... The holometabolous insects, on the other hand, are supposed to have small eggs with little yolk and therefore hatch in an undeveloped form that does not resemble that of their parents (Hinton, 1981).
However, he recognized that data were insufficient for this kind of comparison and instead listed the major axis of the egg as a percentage of the length of body of female from vertex of head to the tip of abdomen.
Based on these data he concluded there is no difference in the size of eggs of hemimetabolous and holometabolous insects, and insects that lay thousands of eggs, like Ephemeroptera and the Tachinidae with microtype eggs, have very small eggs in relation to the size of the female.

Typical holometabolous insect groups are the Coleoptera (Beetles), Lepidoptera (moths, butterflies and skippers), Hymenoptera (sawflies, wasps, ants and bees) and Diptera (flies).
Holometabolous larvae are larvae that pupate before emerging as adult insects, and include many of the most familiar insects.
Holometabolous larva in general are little more than tubular, efficient eating machines.
