The road starts in Keswick before pursuing a winding course up the valley of Borrowdale. It passes alongside Derwent Water with good views of Catbells and the surrounding mountains. It goes through Rosthwaite (view of Glaramara) and changes direction to the west, climbing up to Honister Pass. This part of the route is very zigzagging, with gradients of 1 in 4 (25%) as it struggles up the 200 metres (600 feet) to the top.
