washingtonpost.com: Strapped Hood College to Dip Into Endowment (814 words)
Hood College, beset by financial woes that threatened its survival, has won permission to use $10.5 million of its endowment funds to pay off its most serious debts in a move that some experts called unique.
The bulk of Hood's endowment is made up of funds earmarked by donors for special purposes -- such as scholarships or new buildings -- that generally cannot be touched for regular operating expenses.
Volpe said Hood went to court because much of the $10.5 million came from donors who have since died and because the college wanted to be "open and candid" about its actions.
