Encyclopedia > Hopper crystals

A hopper crystal is a form of crystal, defined by its "hoppered" shape.

Hopper crystals get their form from the fact that they tend to grow more rapidly at the edges of each face, than at the center.

Hoppering has not been much studied for scientific purposes, but has been noticed in many substances, including bismuth, galena, rose quartz, gold, calcite, salt and ice.

Bismuth is known for its synthetic-crystal shape and colour.
