Horsham is mentioned indirectly in the Domesday Book (although this is sometimes debated among historians) adjacent manorial lands and surrounding holdings are also mentioned.
Percy Bysshe Shelley was born at Field Place, west of Horsham, near Broadbridge Heath, and is commemorated by the Shelley Fountain, or 'Rising Universe' a large and intriguing fountain in the shape of a globe, in the town centre.
Horsham is home to the well-known (sixth form) College of Richard Collyer, founded in 1532, and known more commonly as 'Collyers', on Hurst Road.
