Hot Dance Singles Sales (formerly known as Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales) is a chart released weekly by Billboard magazine in the United States. It measures the sale of commercially released singles that deal with dance music and remixes. It was formerly known as Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales, when the chart was restricted to sales of the 12" Maxi Single and CD Maxi Single format, but in recent years, singles only released in the CD Single format have apparently been counted too. It should be noted that the Hot Dance Singles Sales once included non-dance songs and singles without dance remixes if they were released as maxi singles. It was felt that this rule misled the chart's purpose of measuring the sales of dance music, and thus non-dance/non-remix maxi singles have more recently been excluded from this chart. As a result, although many non-dance acts release singles today in the maxi single format, they are not included in this chart unless the single includes dance remixes. The chart has apparently stirred some controversy as it only measures physical singles, and not digital downloads. With the decline of the CD Single, many artists have even declined even from releasing a 12" or CD Maxi Single for dance remixes; instead releasing digital-only exclusive maxi singles/digital bundles on legal download sites like iTunes. Although sales of these digital downloads have been relatively high, because they are not counted towards this chart, many feel that this skews the accuracy of this chart. Digital Downloads are official legally-released music singles released by artists to the public. ... This article is about the iTunes application. ...

It is generally assumed that when one refers to a song or an artist "going to number one on the Dance chart," he or she is referring to the HotDance Club Play chart.
HotDance Club Play is one of the last remaining Billboard charts that remains "frozen" for one week (either the last week in December or the first week in January, depending on the calendar year).
As the HotDance Club Play chart is not monitored electronically like most of the other charts, all songs "hold" their positions for the additional week, and still have the frozen week added to their "weeks on chart" total.
The Hot 100 is calculated from three component charts.
Hot Digital Songs is calculated from one component chart (although it is a component in the sense that multiple versions chart).
Although there are three dance charts (HotDance Club Play, HotDanceSinglesSales, and Dance Radio Airplay), it should be noted that none of these charts are components of each other, nor are they a larger chart formed from the other.
