Encyclopedia > Hot isostatic pressing

A manufacturing process, where materials are pressed into shape.

In hot isostatic pressing (known as HIP) the material to be pressed is placed in a sealed chamber (that normally contains an inert gas so that the material does not chemically react). The chamber is heated, and the pressure inside the chamber increased. The use of a gas to apply the pressure means that the pressure is applied to the material from all directions (hence the use of 'iso' in 'isostatic').

Often used as part of a sintering process.

Process for encapsulating a shaped body for hot isostatic pressing by sol-gel method - Patent 5613993 (3193 words)
After drying, the coated preform is next placed in a hot isostatic press, wherein it is heated under vacuum conditions to a temperature sufficient to allow for the "baking out" of any binders or lubricants in the preform through the pores of the glass.
After the bake-out step, the temperature in the hot isostatic press is raised to a level sufficient to allow the pores of the glass to close, thereby sealing the preform in a gas-tight capsule.
The hot isostatic press is maintained under constant conditions of temperature and pressure for approximately one hour, after which the formed body is removed from the press and allowed to cool under ambient conditions of temperature and pressure.
The Ultimate Hip Dog Breeds Information Guide and Reference (117 words)
In anatomy, the hip is the bony projection of the femur, known as the greater trochanter, and the overlying muscle and fat.
The hip joint is the joint between the femur and the acetabulum of the pelvis.
Hip, or hep, is also American slang, an adjective meaning "fashionably current." African-Americans introduced this use of the word into the English lexicon, which is surmised to have its origin in the Wolof "hepi" or "hipi," which means "to open one's eyes" or otherwise be aware of what is going on.
