Encyclopedia > Hotbird

Hot Bird is the common name of a family of 5 satellites operated by Eutelsat, located at 13 degrees East over the Equator (orbital position) and transmitting in free-to-air towards 98 million households in Europe, North Africa &, the Middle East.

They are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6. There is no Hot Bird 5 anymore; it was located elsewhere on the orbit, transmitted towards a different location and got eventually renamed into Arabsat 2D. Hot Birds 7a and 8 are currently under construction. Hot Bird 7 was lost in December 2002 during the Ariane 5 launch.
