There are many different types of houses in Finland. Some modern houses can be made of a variety of materials, such as wood and metal. Thick glass windows may let in warm sunlight. Modern houses have unusual angles and interesting designs. Even though it is very cold in Finland in wintertime, houses sometimes have porches so people can sit in the sun. Double glazing used to be the standard, but these days no houses are built without triple glazing.

All houses built before 1930 or so were built almost exclusively of wood or stone.
