The Houston Grand Opera (HGO) is a Houston, Texas-based opera company. It was founded in 1955. David Gockley was its longtime general director, serving 33 years from 1972 to 2005 before moving to the San Francisco Opera on January 1, 2006. Gockley was suceeded by Anthony Freud, the former head of Welsh National Opera. HGO presents seven to ten productions per season in three repertory periods and it presents both the standard operatic repertoire as well as new works. About Last Night: Houston Grand Opera: an electrifying Giovanni (1390 words)
HGO music director Patrick Summers conducted the HGO Orchestra in a well-paced performance that dragged at a couple of slower spots in the tale.
I don't have Charles Ward's experience, nor have I lived in Houston more than five years, but I've seen three Giovannis in other towns in the past few years, including Thomas Hampson's at the Met, and this was easily the best of them.
We've all seen her a whole bunch of times at HGO lately, but I didn't know she had Elvira in her.

October 19, 2004 -- Houston Mayor Bill White issued a proclamation today at City Hall proclaiming October 18-24 as Houston Grand Opera 50th Anniversary Kickoff Week in recognition of HGO’s 50th season, which begins Friday night with the presentation of Madame Butterfly at Wortham Center.
Accepting the proclamation on behalf of HGO during the City Council session were HGO board president John S. Arnoldy, general director David Gockley and music director Patrick Summers.
