Orchestras connected with German Sängerfeste from 1885 to 1913, a local Symphony Club by 1902, and a visit by Modeste Altschuler's Russian Symphony Orchestra in the 1912-13 season whetted local appetites for a permanent ensemble.
The orchestra at this time was hampered by the unevenness of talent among its members, some of whom were amateurs, and the poor quality of some of the instruments, which resulted from the orchestra's low budget.
In the spring of 1936 the symphony society amended its charter and became officially the Houston Symphony Society.

I completed physical work on my Symphony No. 1 two years later, and it was premiered in January 1988 by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, for whom it was written, under the direction of David Zinman.
However, it was not until some time later that the Houston Symphony Orchestra commissioned its successor, which was finally set down in full on paper by July 15, 1994.
As a result, the arch-like form of the symphony brings the work to a close at virtually the same structural point at which it began, but the conclusion's emotional world is light years away from that at the beginning.
