Howell Township is a township located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 48,903.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 158.0 km² (61.0 mi²). 157.8 km² (60.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.15% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 48,903 people, 16,063 households, and 13,011 families residing in the township. The population density is 310.0/km² (802.8/mi²). There are 16,572 housing units at an average density of 105.0/km² (272.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 89.99% White, 3.56% African American, 0.12% Native American, 3.58% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.29% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. 5.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,063 households out of which 47.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.4% are married couples living together, 8.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.0% are non-families. 15.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.04 and the average family size is 3.42.

In the township the population is spread out with 30.9% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 32.8% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 8.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.7 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $68,069, and the median income for a family is $74,623. Males have a median income of $55,349 versus $34,722 for females.
