The Huai Khwang district was established from area formerly part of Phaya Thai. Adjustments to the district were made in 1978, adjusting boundary among neighbor districts Phaya Thai and Bang Kapi, and in 1993, creating new Din Daeng district. The Huai Khwang Metro Station is located on the intersection of the Ratchadaphisek road with the Prachasongkroa and Pracharat Bamphen Road. From this station, several entertainment complexes are within walking distance, including some belonging to the famous Davis Group of massage parlours.


Also located in the Huai Khwang district is the main depot of the Metro, covering an area of 0.48 km² (118 acres).

The district is sub-divided into three sub-districts (Kwaeng).
