In 2003, he succeeded Herbert Haupt as Vice-Chancellor of Austria. Gorbach is also Austrian Minister for Traffic in a coalition government headed by the People's Party.
Before starting his political career he worked as manager in the textile industry (Getzner).
Gorbach could not attend Alpbach this year due to his duties in connection with the heavy floodings that hit Western Austria, bridges was able to interview him about the Lisbon Goals, Austria's upcoming EU Presidency in 2006 and his point of view regarding "excellence" at Austrian universities.

Gorbach replaces Herbert Haupt, 55, regarded as having been pushed out by Haider, even though he was a loyal lieutenant.
