Both the publishing house and the magazine started off at the same time in 1974. It was founded by Moebius, Claire Bretecher and Gotlib who left Dargaud as a protest against René Goscinny's leadership, which Moebius deemed to conventional. Their first published title was the science fiction story Le Bandard Fou which later was printed in Metal Hurlant. In 1977, They gained world wide attention by simply translating the magazine in English and distributing it in North America and the countries of the Commonwealth under the name Heavy Metal.
