Hunnewell is a city located in Shelby County, Missouri. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 227.

Hunnewell is located at 39°40'1" North, 91°51'34" West (39.666976, -91.859330)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.6 km˛ (0.6 mi˛). 1.6 km˛ (0.6 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 227 people, 95 households, and 62 families residing in the city. The population density is 139.1/km˛ (358.3/mi˛). There are 112 housing units at an average density of 68.6/km˛ (176.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 90.31% White, 8.37% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. 0.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 95 households out of which 31.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.5% are married couples living together, 12.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% are non-families. 30.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 3.03.


In the city the population is spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 110.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.2 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $24,861, and the median income for a family is $31,429. Males have a median income of $28,750 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,985. 15.9% of the population and 13.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.9% of those under the age of 18 and 10.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Missouri's state law requires that all peace officers in the state report specific information including a driver's race for each traffic stop made in the state.

H. H. Hunnewell: Information from Answers.com (313 words)
Hunnewell, (July 27 1810 - 1902) was a wealthy railroad financier, philanthropist, and amateur botanist.
The towns of Hunnewell, Kansas and Hunnewell, Missouri were named in his honor, and both the town of Wellesley, and Wellesley College are named in honor of Hunnewell's estate, in turned named for his wife's maiden name of "Welles".
Hunnewell's philanthropy included funding the conifer collection at Arnold Arboretum, as well as his donations towards the Arboretum's administration building, gifts to Asa Gray to revise and complete Flora of North America, a donation for the Eliot Dormitory at Wellesley College in 1887, and endowment of Wellesley's Chair of Botany in January, 1901.
