The castle

This is Iancu Corvin's Castle in Hunedoara. Iancu Corvin (also known as Iancu/Ioan of Hunedoara / translated "Hunyad" in Hungarian) was one of the biggest millitary chiefs of the Middle Ages; he lived in the 15'th Century. Of Romanian origin, but catholic (his father Voicu switched to catholicism in order to keep his noble privileges, as local Romanians were discriminated by the occupying Hungarian Kingdom in the Middle Ages' Transylvania), Iancu Corvin managed, by his own military and diplomatic successes, to become - de facto - the ruler of the Hungarian Kingdom, in the years that preceded the reign of his son, Mathia Corvin (who is considered to be the greatest of all Hungarian Kings). Iancu Corvin died after successfuly defending Belgrade of the Ottomans' attacks, in 1456; he is burried in Alba Iulia, not far from this castle in Hunedoara, built by him and finished by his son.
