The song grew from another song called "Under The Weather Girls". A rough version was taped. However, Joshua Tree co-producer Daniel Lanois didn't like it — except for Larry Mullen, Jr.'s drum track, which the band used as the foundation of "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For". The development of the song saw the addition of such things as a subtle auto-pan effect added to one of The Edge's guitar overdubs and Bono, a tenor, singing in the upper register of his range to add to the feeling of spiritual yearning. Both Bono and Edge have, in fact, called it a gospel song on numerous occasions. Daniel Lanois says he is very attached to "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and has, on occasion, joined U2 on stage to perform it. There was a look in her eyes that bespoke her relief, as if she might have actually thought that I would toss off the race and relegate myself to the role of onlooker.
I was still pondering as I walked with Bennie to her stables to meet the pony that was to carry me in the race.
Bennie shot him a withering look before continuing, “As I was saying, despite the fact that one of the riders happens to be something of an eligible and handsome prize himself.” She finished, leveling a smoldering glance in my direction.

There are few, if any, albums that can claim to start with three consecutive all-time classic songs, such as 'Where the streets have no name' (about 3rd world countries), the gospel-espue 'I still haven't found what I'm looking for', a song almost everyone can relate to, and 'With or without you', a misinterpreted hit.
Although it has the political message, and at times is quite excellant, and certainly provides a good tempo change after With or Without you, much of it is just noise, which is a little disappointing that U2 couldn't do with it what they did with their other tracks.
'I still haven't found what i'm looking for', 'With or Without You', 'Where the streets have no name' are the famous classics but the album has some brilliant songs that are in my opinion underrated.
