I Still Know What You Did Last Summer is a horror film released in 1998 as a sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer. The film was then followed by I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer. The film stars Jennifer Love Hewitt, Brandy Norwood, Mekhi Phifer, and Freddie Prinze, Jr.. The screenplay was written by Trey Callaway, based on characters originally created in a popular novel by Lois Duncan. Calloway's script was published in an edited "young adult" format, leaving all descriptions of violence but omitting the harsher language. On August 15, 2006, Columbia Pictures released I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer as a straight-to-video sequel to the film. Plot
In I Know What You Did Last Summer, Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) had just spent a harrowing summer running for her life and dealing with the brutal murders of her high school friends by a vengeful fisherman named Ben Willis. One year later, Julie has fled her hometown to attend college in Boston and leave the painful memories behind her. But, despite her best efforts to lead a normal life, the past has caught up with her. On the one-year anniversary of last summer's tragic deaths, Julie's college grades are slipping, and her relationship with high school sweetheart Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze, Jr.) is faltering, although he secretly plans to propose to her. Karla Wilson (Brandy Norwood), Julie's spunky friend and roommate, wins an all-expenses-paid Bahamas vacation for four on the Fourth of July weekend, providing she can name the capital of Brazil. She answers "Rio," and is told that she is correct. Julie wants to invite Ray on the trip, but he declines, hurt by her refusal to visit him in Southport, where last summer's murders took place. Thus, Julie, Karla, Karla's boyfriend Tyrell (Mekhi Phifer), and their new friend Will Benson (Matthew Settle) head to the Bahamas. However, the other hotel guests are leaving because hurricane season has begun. Meanwhile, Ray, who has decided to surprise Julie and go on the trip, and his friend Dave (John Hawkes), are driving out of Southport. Suddenly, they see an idling BMW and a body lying in the middle of the road. Ray goes to check it out, and Dave is impaled by the killer while he waits in the truck. Ray runs as the fisherman hops in the truck and attempts to run him down, and he stumbles into a ravine. He awakes in a hospital and realizes Julie's in trouble. He leaves without being discharged, exchanges Julie's ring for a pistol, and steals a boat. Meanwhile, several murders have occurred at the resort, and Julie is forced to reveal her past. Suspicion falls on the voodoo-practicing porter Estes (Bill Cobbs), who is trying to protect them. It's revealed that the vacation was arranged especially for Julie, and Karla hadn't "won" anything, not least because she'd incorrectly answered the question (the capital of Brazil is Brasília, not Rio de Janeiro). Will Benson is in fact Ben Willis's son, and he leads Julie away from the others after killing Estes. Meanwhile Ben disposes of the bartender Nancy (Jennifer Esposito) and attacks Karla. Ray arrives just as Ben catches up with Julie and Will. In the ensuing fight, Ben accidentally impales Will with his hook, and is shot with Ray's gun several times by Julie. The Coast Guard arrives, rescuing Ray, Julie, and Karla (Tyrell had been killed). In the tag scene, Ray and Julie are in their newly-purchased house, and Julie, who is wearing an engagement ring, hears a sound coming from another bedroom. She goes to shut an open window in the other room, not noticing the muddy footprints on the floor. As Julie enters her bedroom and sits down, she looks in the mirror, and spies the fisherman under her bed. She screams, and Ben grabs her legs and pulls her under the bed. Whether Ray and Julie survived is not known since the sequel I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer did not reveal their fate.
