The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) was founded in 1965 as a result of the Venice Charter of 1964 and offers advice to UNESCO on World Heritage Sites. Its international headquarters are in Paris, and ICOMOS UK's headquarter is in London.
On October 9 1996 the General Assembly in Sofia has ratified the ICOMOS Charter on the Protection and Management of Underwater Cultural Heritage.
This Charter is intended to encourage the protection and management of underwater cultural heritage in inland and inshore waters, in shallow seas and in the deep oceans.
It focuses on the specific attributes and circumstances of cultural heritage under water and should be understood as a supplement to the ICOMOS Charter for the Protection and Management of the Archaeological Heritage, 1990.
