The company was initially known for horror comics such as 30 Days of Night, Dark Days and numerous others. Some of the most well-known writers of horror comics, including Ashley Wood, Ben Templesmith and Steve Niles, have written for IDW. The company now specialize more in comics based on current TV franchises such as 24, Angel and the numerous CSI shows. Most recently, they have acquired the Transformers license from Hasbro and have hired fan-favorites such as Simon Furman, Don Figueroa and E. J. Su to work on them. Fallen Angel is a comic book created by Peter David and formerly published by DC Comics until the spring of 2005 until cancellation from low sales.
It resumed publication through IDW Publishing in December 2005 as the title is owned by David and can be moved to other publishers.
It was also one of the few "mature readers" books that DC published outside its Vertigo imprint.

IDW Publishing, the publishing arm of Idea and Design Works, LLC, is the comic book licensee of several popular shows, such as CSI (CBS), 24 (FOX), and ANGEL (Fox).
IDW is also home to successful adaptations of comics based on the Konami videogames Metal Gear Solid and Castlevania, and movie adaptations from Dawn of the Dead to Shaun of the Dead.
In both 2004 and 2005, they were awarded Diamond Comics’ Gem Award for “Publisher of the Year.” For the TRANSFORMERS series, IDW plans on using a mix of well-known and up-and-coming illustrators, inkers and writers to bring the property to new heights.
