The 3rd arrondissement contains the Renaissance square of Place des Vosges and also the northern part of the medieval district of Le Marais, which today is known for being the gay district of Paris.
With a land area of 1.171 km² (0.452 sq.miles, or 289 acres), the 3rd arrondissement is the second smallest arrondissement in the city.
The peak of population of the 3rd arrondissement actually occurred before 1861, though the arrondissement has existed in its current shape only since the re-organization of Paris in 1860.
Arrondissements of Paris - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (292 words)
These are not to be confused with departmental arrondissements, which subdivide the 100 French départements.
The 20 arrondissements are arranged in the form of a clockwise spiral, starting with the 1st in the middle of the city on the right bank (north bank) of the Seine River.
The previous 12 arrondissements were rearranged with this new territory to become the present 20.
