The Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO) is located in Paris, France. It was founded in 1795 under the French Revolution and is now one of the country's Grandes écoles ("great schools"). It is specialised in Eastern languages and civilisations. Over 90 languages are taught at the INALCO, covering Asian, African, eastern European, South Pacific and amerindian languages. The INALCO is the French partner of the British SOAS which now teaches mainly Asian and African languages. Margaret Thatcher (and successors too) reduced public money for this great school and today SOAS (under the University of London) is living on its short history. The Eiffel Tower has become a symbol of Paris throughout the world. ... The Paris-based ‘Institut National des Langues et Civilisations’ (INALCO) announced that it will be offering, as from February 2005, a 50-hour curriculum unit on the Maltese language through the efforts of Ambassador of Malta in France Prof Salvino Busuttil.
Maltese linguist Elgar-Paul Magro has been entrusted by INALCO with the course, while it is envisaged that visiting Maltese lecturers also participate therein, within the European Union’s ERASMUS programme.
INALCO is an official scientific and cultural institution operating within the framework of the Ministry of Youth, National Education and Research, whose mission is to teach the language, history, geography and culture of countries of Central and Eastern Europe, Asia and Oceania, Africa and the Americas.
