The Program
The IT Architect Certification program was developed by The Open Group members in response to the growing demand for highly experienced IT architects with proven track record of success.
Under the program, practicing IT Architects can achieve the IT Architect Certification based on demonstrating substantial skills, experience and success in architecting solutions across the whole lifecycle. In addition to certifying individuals directly, the program also provides Accreditation of third-party IT architect certification programs. The skill and experience requirements for both the Direct Certification and the Accredited programs are identical. A franchise option is available to professional societies and other eligible organizations.

The first accredited IT Architect Certification program: IBM (announcement)
As with a building architect, much of the IT architect’s work is focused on the front end of the solution life cycle: listening to clients, understanding their business requirements and systematically forming incrementally more detailed definitions of the structures of an IT solution — an architecture.
When applying for initial certification or for certification at a higher level, candidates are required to create a certification package.
Second, certification credentials are granted to the individual and remain with them as long as they maintain good standing as a practicing IT architect.
The architect'scertificate constitutes a representation to the owner that the work has progressed to the point indicated in the contractor's application, and that the work, to the architect's best knowledge, information, and belief, is in accordance with the contract documents.
If the architect fails to issue the certificate through no fault of the contractor, or if the owner fails to pay within the time specified, the contractor, after giving the notices required in the contract, is entitled to stop the work until payment has been received.
When the architect is satisfied that the work is acceptable under the terms of the contract documents, and that the contract is fully performed, the architect should issue the final certificate.
