Department of economics

The Department offers a full complement of academic programs: the B.A. in Economics, the Masters in Economics, the Masters in Public Policy, the Masters in Economic Theory and the Ph.D. in Economics. The undergraduate program in Economics is the largest and best known of the ITAM programs with an annual registration of 200 students. Their talent and academic achievement is often recognized by external organizations and for more than thirty years, our students have been awarded national prizes for their thesis work.

The scientific production is published primarily in specialized international journals and has confirmed the Department´s position as the leader in its field within Latin America and one of the top 50 departments of economics worldwide. ITAM channels research activities through two centers: the Center for Economic Research and the Center for Applied Economics and Public Policy. The first is dedicated to developing academic research and maintaining a link between the Center and the international scientific community. The second focuses on issues applied to the Mexican economy and works primarily with other local research centers and government bodies.

The ITAM Ph.D. in Economics and the Masters Economic Theory are programs that are exclusively dedicated to the development of research skills. The Ph.D. forms part of the Latin American Doctoral Program, a joint effort between the Universidad de Chile, the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella in Argentina and the ITAM. The Masters in Economics and the Masters in Public Policy combine elements of formal research with the development of practical skills for their application in the professional environment.

The ITAM has a long tradition of attracting exceptional students who are committed to achieving the highest standards of academic excellence. Since 1976, ITAM economics students have won first place in the annual Premio Banamex de Economía and they are frequently awarded prizes in the Tlacaelel, IMEF and Banobras competitions.

The ITAM Department of Economics sends more students on to postgraduate programs overseas than all the other Mexican universities together. Our graduates enroll in programs in universities such as Chicago, MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Northwestern, Pennsylvania, Berkeley, Columbia, UCLA, NYU and Rochester, often with scholarships from the university itself.

Most of the full time faculty members hold Ph.D.s from top universities in the U.S. and have earned international recognition for their academic achievements and publication record.
