IUPUI has more students from Indiana than any other campus in the state. More than 75 percent of IUPUI classes have 25 or fewer students. IUPUI also has the most ethnically diverse student body in the Indiana University system.

Because of the school of medicine and other graduate schools, IUPUI hosts research on infectious disease, cancer, and degenerative disorders. Largely because of the school of medicine, the campus has more sponsored research than either Indiana University Bloomington or Purdue University West Lafayette. In 2002-2003, IUPUI research income set a record for the campus, with grants totaling $265,922,555, an increase of more than 31 percent over 2001-2002.
