In 2006, then-champion Brock Lesnar was stripped of the title for being unable to defend it due to what was described as "problems with a working visa";[4] however, Lesnar kept the physical belt and signed with Antonio Inoki's Inoki Genome Federation (IGF) in 2007, losing the championship to Kurt Angle on the inaugural broadcast.[5] Though the IGF recognizes the belt as the IWGP Third Belt Championship, New Japan does not sanction or recognize it. In 2000 Lesnar signed with World Wrestling Entertainment (then the World Wrestling Federation) and was sent to Ohio Valley Wrestling for development, where he wrestled in a tag team named the Minnesota Stretching Crew with Benjamin (a reference to the Minnesota Wrecking Crew).
On October 8, 2005, Lesnar won the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship in a three-way match at a New Japan Pro Wrestling show in the Tokyo Dome, which included the then-champion Kazuyuki Fujita and Masahiro Chono.
On March 19, 2006, Brock Lesnar retained his championship, defeating Akebono with a DDT and not a F-5, but while the referee was down on the mat he hit the former Sumo wrestler with the IWGP belt, but he was not disqualified.
