The son of Henry Martyn and Kathleen Ethel Cundy, Ian Cundy was educated at Monkton Combe School in Somerset, at Trinity College, Cambridge where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and theology in 1967, and obtained a Master of Arts. From 1969 to 1973, Cundy was assistant curate of Christ Church, New Malden, from 1973 to 1977 he was lecturer and chaplain of Oak Hill College, Southgate and from 1978 to 1983 he was team rector in Mortlake and East Sheen. In 1983, he became warden of Cranmer Hall, St John's College, Durham, a post he held until 1992. He was Suffragan Bishop of Lewes in the Diocese of Chichester between 1992 and 1996, and became 37th Bishop of Peterborough in 1996.
