Read began his musical career with Current 93. He contributed vocals to the tracks, "Benediction" and "Malediction" on the 1987 album, Swastikas for Noddy as well as Loony Roons, recorded in 1990. He aided Douglas P. on the Death in June album, Brown Book and appeared on Crooked Crosses for the Nodding God, a reworking of Swastikas for Noddy, with new tracks and arrangments. Read does not consider music to be his key interest. He began studying The Nordic mysteries in the late 1970s. He became interested in runic magick around the same time. Read eventually joined the Illuminates of Thanateros (IOT), despite his claim that he was never a chaos magician. He became the leader of the English branch of the organization after founder Peter Carroll resigned in the early 1990s.
