Encyclopedia > Iasion

In Greek mythology, Iasion or Iasus was usually the son of Electra and Zeus and brother of Dardanus. Iasion founded the mystic rites on the island of Samothrace. With Demeter, he was the father of Plutus. Because of his hubris, Iasion was killed by Zeus with a thunderbolt.

JASION : Greek demi-god of the Samothracian mysteries ; mythology : IASION (1065 words)
IASION was an agricultural demi-god or hero, the springtime consort of the goddess Demeter in the Kabeirian mysteries of the island of Samothrake.
Iasion in myth was a mortal-lover of Demeter, who was struck down by Zeus with a thunderbolt when he discovered the pair copulating in a thrice-ploughed field.
To Iasion and Demter, according to the story the myths relate, was born Ploutos (Wealth), but the reference is, as a matter of fact, to the wealth of the corn, which was presented to Iasion because of Demeter’s association with him at the time of the wedding of Harmonia.
