Geography

The parish has a total area of 1,691 km2 (653 mi2). 1,602 km2 (619 mi2) of it is land and 89 km2 (34 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 5.24% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 33,320 people, 10,674 households, and 8,016 families residing in the parish. The population density is 21/km2 (54/mi2). There are 11,953 housing units at an average density of 7/km2 (19/mi2). The racial makeup of the parish is 49.26% White, 49.70% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. 1.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 10,674 households out of which 36.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.60% are married couples living together, 20.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.90% are non-families. 21.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.81 and the average family size is 3.29.


In the parish the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 10.50% from 18 to 24, 31.10% from 25 to 44, 21.50% from 45 to 64, and 10.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 99.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.50 males.


The median income for a household in the parish is $29,039, and the median income for a family is $34,100. Males have a median income of $32,074 versus $20,007 for females. The per capita income for the parish is $13,272. 23.10% of the population and 19.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 30.10% of those under the age of 18 and 18.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
