Ibrahim's father, Jamsheed Quli Qutb Shah, killed his own father and blinded his brother, taking the throne in the 16th century. Ibrahim ran away and lived in exile as an honored guest of the Raja of Vijayanagar, Emperor Aliya Ramamrayalu. There, he developed a love for the Telugu language which he patronized and encouraged during his reign. When Jamsheed died, Ibrahim returned to Golconda and took the throne.
