The Ice Bowl also refers to a tentative event planned by the NBC television network and the National Hockey League. It is an outdoor NHL regular season game, that will be played in either Buffalo, New York (Ralph Wilson Stadium) It was earlier reported that the game may take place in Detroit, however, most media outlets have reported that Buffalo will in fact, host said event. Near the end of the July (somewhere between the 25-29) the outline of an ice rink was assembled at the stadium. It is assumed this makes the event official, although the league has not revealed plans yet. WGRZ-TV in Buffalo recently reported the Buffalo Sabres have been designated as "host" team for the game, and the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports the Pittsburgh Penguins have agreed to be the visiting team for such an event.
The game will be historic, only the second NHL game ever played outdoors, and the first ever in the United States. It will also be the first two American teams to compete in an outdoor NHL game.
The "outdoor" game has been played before, numerous times at the collegiate level, most notably on October 6th, 2001 when Michigan and Michigan State faced off at Spartan Stadium. A crowd of 74,554 was the new world record for a hockey game.
