An iceage is a period of long-term downturn in the temperature of Earth's climate, resulting in an expansion of the continental ice sheets, polar ice sheets and mountain glaciers ("glaciation").
Glaciologically, iceage is often used to mean a period of ice sheets in the northern and southern hemispheres; by this definition we are still in an iceage (because the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets still exist).
The present iceages are the most studied and best understood, particularly the last 400,000 years, since this is the period covered by ice cores that record atmospheric composition and proxies for temperature and ice volume.
Ice is a common metaphor for things that are cold, hard, and clear in some way; for instance, "ice" is a colloquial term for diamond, and also for some forms of the drug amphetamine.
When ice melts, it absorbs as much heat energy (the heat of fusion) as it would take to heat an equivalent mass of water by 80 °C, while its temperature remains a constant 0 °C. Consequently, ice has long been valued as a means of cooling.
Ice scrapers are tools designed to break the ice free and clear the windows, though removing the ice can be a long, labor-intensive, and stressful process—especially when a driver ends up running late for work as a result.
