In the District of Columbia, the licenseplate is validated with a windshield sticker that indicates the expiration date, the licenseplate number, the year and make of vehicle, and part of the vehicle identification number, thereby allowing easier detection of fraudulent use.
Plates issued to cars based at the United Nations in New York City are reversed, with the four-digit number first, followed by the two-letter country code, followed by the status code (NNNN LL L).
Licenseplates also offer information such as the weight class, the county in which the vehicle is registered, use restrictions, and the age and weight of the vehicle.
Specialty plates are licenseplates that somehow differ in design from the standard state licenseplate, although states often use different terms and definitions for plates that deviate from the standard look.
Although the whale licenseplate is popular in Massachusetts, for example, there has been such low demand for four of the seven special plates approved during the past nine years - that benefit causes - that the makers have not yet recouped their costs.
